As per the Shiva Purana, it contained 100,000 verses but the Purana says that they were abridged by sage Vyasa. [5][8] Klaus Klostermaier estimates that some chapters of the surviving Shiva Purana manuscripts were probably written around the 14th century.
The Shiva Purana includes sections on Shiva-centered cosmology as well as mythology. It also explores the connection between Gods as well as ethics, Yoga and Tirtha (pilgrimage), sites Bhakti, sites, and geography.
The Vayu Purana used to be known as Shiva Purana in the 19th and 20th century. It was sometimes also added as a part of the whole Shiva Purana. Modern scholarship has the two texts as distinct as distinct texts, with Vayu Purana being the older text, written sometime before the 2nd century CE. It's sometimes referred to as a Mahapurana by some experts, but it's often referred to as Upapurana by other scholars.

It is unclear which the year Shiva Purana was written. There is no data that can be trusted. There is no reliable data. Researchers such as Klostermaier and Hazra believe that the oldest chapters in the manuscript could be from the 10th to 11th centuries CE.
Hazra claims that the Bombay manuscript, which was published in the nineteenth century was more rare than others and more likely older than other manuscripts from eastern or southern India. [18]

However, if you go through the Shiva Purana it is impossible to discern Shiva as a person who is good or as a bad person. Shiva is everything. He is the ugliest of all, and he is also the most beautiful; he is the best but he's the worst. He remains the one with the best discipline, and he's a drinker. Demons, gods and all sorts of creatures throughout the world revere Shiva. The so-called civilization has removed all the unpalatable stories about Shiva, but that is where the essence in Shiva is. Completely contradictory aspects of life have been integrated into the personality of Shiva. This is a complex blend of all the qualities of existence have been put into one being because when you accept this person as a single being you've crossed the line of existence the entire spectrum of existence. The entire struggle of life is trying to pick out what is beautiful and what is not, that which is good and which is not. It is not a problem with anyone if only you can accept this person who is an combination of everything life can be.
If you carefully study the stories from the Shiva Purana, you will be able to see an understanding of the Theory of Relativity, Quantum Mechanics and the entire field of modern physics - has been beautifully expressed in stories. This is a dialectical cultural tradition; science was expressed through stories. All things have been made personified. However, somewhere along the way people discarded the science and simply carried on the stories. The stories were inflated from generation to generation to the point of being completely absurd. If you put the science back into stories, it is a beautiful way to express science.
It is believed that the Shiva Purana has been described as being the highest method of elevating the human spirit up to the peak of consciousness. It's expressed in the form of amazing stories. Yoga is presented as the science of science, without any stories attached to it however, if you look at it in a more comprehensive sense, yoga and the Shiva Purana are not able to be separated. The first is for people who like stories, another is for people who are open to looking at things scientifically. However, the fundamentals of both are the same.
In the present, scientists are conducting research on the nature of modern education.
